UK commits to decarbonise electricity system by 2035

The UK government has announced plans to decarbonise the country's power system by 2035, instead of the previous target of 2050. The plan focuses on building a secure, home-grown energy sector - including nuclear energy - that reduces reliance on fossil fuels and exposure to volatile global wholesale energy prices.


US DOE funds hydrogen production from nuclear power

A project to demonstrate the production of clean hydrogen energy from nuclear power at the Palo Verde nuclear power plant in Arizona is to receive USD20 million in federal funding as part of US Department of Energy efforts to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen to USD1 per kilogram. The announcement comes as DOE marks Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day.


Nuclear to support mining expansion in Armenia

Armenia is preparing to launch a joint development in which a new nuclear power plant will support an expansion of copper mining in a collaboration between the country and Russian billionaire businessman Roman Trotsenko. The plan taking shape involves developing the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine, which has recently been taken over by Trotsenko's GeoProMining and shared with the Armenian state.


US EIA projects continued rise in energy-related CO2 emissions

Global energy consumption and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions are set to increase in the period to 2050 as a result of population and economic growth if current policy and technology trends continue, according to the US Energy Information Administration's International Energy Outlook 2021 which has been published this week. Although worldwide nuclear generation increases by 15% throughout the projection period, nuclear generation in OECD regions decreases by almost one-third.


IAEA finds commitment to safety at Paluel plant

EDF has demonstrated a commitment to safety at its Paluel nuclear power plant, an expert team from the International Atomic Energy Agency has concluded. The team encouraged the operator to continue implementation of its operational safety improvement initiatives at the plant in northern France.


New Brunswick fast reactor operational 'within the decade'

A 2029 start-up for an ARC-100 advanced small modular reactor in New Brunswick is an "aggressive" but achievable target, the CEO of ARC Clean Energy Canada said yesterday. Bill Labbe was speaking at an event hosted by the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries, held as the company prepares to begin the second phase of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's Vendor Design Review process.

Urenco launches new radioisotope cascade

Urenco Stable Isotopes has expanded its stable and medical isotopes facility in Almelo, the Netherlands, officially opening its new Leonardo da Vinci cascade yesterday. The company - a subsidiary of uranium enrichment company Urenco Nederland BV - said the move was in response to growing demand for medical isotopes.
